EVERY TIME YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH TO SPEAK IS AN OPPORTUNITY.

If we are serious about transforming vocal habits & making vocal change, we MUST realize the absolute TRUTH in this message.

Literally, EVERY time you open your mouth to speak is an OPPORTUNITY to use the “good” voice. EVERY time you open your mouth to speak is an OPPORTUNITY to passively choose the same ole same ole OR actively choose your “best voice” even if it’s annoying that you may need to temporarily focus to “find” & maintain this voice. EVERY time you open your mouth to speak is an OPPORTUNITY to train a new habit…to take ownership of your voice & all the ways you use it. The POWER of this habit formation & vocal growth is totally YOURS.

Can you imagine how quick you could form & solidify a new vocal habit if you were conscious of its application every single time you opened your mouth to speak? I heard it once in a course with a strong research-based application to the theory of motor learning & I’ll never forget it (because it’s the #truth): REPETITION, REPETITION, REPETITION. NEGATIVE PRACTICE, NEGATIVE PRACTICE, NEGATIVE PRACTICE. Our minds and bodies LEARN the BEST via repetition multiple times per day (even for very brief periods of time)—so, COMMIT to practice. Use cell phone alarms, sticky notes, voicemails or audio notes to yourself, etc. to help you remember. We also learn by improving our kinesthetic awareness (connecting to what we FEEL) & actually performing the habitual voice (“old voice”, “bad voice”, etc.), noticing what we FEEL & hear…& then performing the same task in the optimal/target voice (“good voice”, “clear voice”, etc.), & again, noticing what we FEEL & hear.  This improves our “control” over voice use patterns & resulting quality. It also empowers us to “reset” the voice if we revert to “old habits” & helps us take vocal ownership.
