What is FACIAL CUPPING?!

WHAT is Facial Cupping?

.

Sidenote: I LOVE RESEARCH, evidenced based medicine, and using data to guide diagnostic and therapeutic practice. However, I ALSO love holistic types of approaches that may be less data-driven but consistently demonstrate improvements in patient perception, overall “feeling”, and voice quality.

.

ONE of these such approaches is something I was recently trained in called FACIAL CUPPING.  To be honest, I hadn’t ever heard of this until I was getting a massage myself and my therapist (who was also trained in cupping) starting talking to me about facial cupping when I mentioned to her that I am trained in manual therapy/myofascial release for neck, voice, and swallowing disorders.

.

Primarily, facial cupping aids the integumentary and lymphatic systems. Clearing the neck region allows the lymph upon the face a clearer path towards the main subclavian terminal branches (terminus), which leads lymph back to the superior vena cava (cardiovascular system). It’s important to ensure that lymph flows in the proper directions.

.

General benefits of BODY CUPPING include: increased circulation of blood, restoration of skin collagen, changes to connective tissue tension, improved skin and fascial integrity, reduction in inflammation, aid in scar tissue and adhesion removal, more efficient movement of lymph fluid, reduction in pain, and reduction in muscle spasms.

.

Benefits of FACIAL CUPPING include: strengthen integrity of collagen, rejuvenate and brighten dull skin, firm and tighten skin, reduce lymphatic edema, reduce wrinkles, improve skin tone and texture, improve skin moisture and hydration, soften scar tissue, clear pores of sweat/oil, reduce puffiness and under-eye circles, RELIEVE FACIAL MUSCLE TENSION, encourage tissue regeneration, aid neuropathy symptoms, provide TMJ RELIEF, & provide SINUS/HEADACHE RELIEF.

.

Of course, there are contraindications & important considerations to keep in mind (like there are with any diagnostic or treatment approach), but in general this method is pretty available for use with most client/patient populations.

.

Facial cupping is recommended 1-2x/week for about four weeks, and then once monthly to maintain benefits.
