Sub-occipital release for eliminating tension...

September 4, 2020

.

Did you know the muscles in the back of your neck can hold a lot of tension?!...and that this can have a negative impact on your voice?

.

The sub-occipital release aims to soften the fascia and muscle tissue in the sub-occipital area. This helps to open up the area between the C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae at the top of the neck and base of the head (occiput)... AND this one is a GAME CHANGER for me.... and so many of my patients & clients as well.
.
.
The release technique (focused in the region of the occiput— base of skull) can be used to treat tension headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, upper back pain, TMJ dysfunction, & of course overall tension in the region of the head & neck that can negatively impact the voice.
.
.
The sub-occipital release can reduce tension in the soft tissues of the cervical spine, especially the upper cervical sub-occipital aspect of the spine. The release technique is held until the tissues “relax” &/or the patient/client reports an improved sensation in the region (usually by identification of a reduced number on a numeric scale as established by clinician & patient/client prior to initiating treatment). This can take anywhere between seconds to several minutes depending on the patient… Patience is the key & lingering is essential. We believe there’s a lot happening between the fingers of the therapist & the brain of the patient/client. Although we know we are touching the skin, & believe we are also contacting tissues & muscles and likely interacting with the lymph system as well,  we cannot forget the significant role the brain plays in orchestrating tension release.
.
.
Daily postural habits can be a prime culprit of tension in this region (shoulders hunched forward, chin/head protracted forward, gaze shifted downward at a device, etc.), as can stress, eye strain, teeth grinding, & trauma. Release of the tension in this region can be extremely helpful in resetting postural issues, releasing tension in the head/neck, & FREEING THE VOICE.
