Are you vocally FIT?

As an OCCUPATIONAL VOICE USER, vocal FITNESS is super important and should be TOP PRIORITY. The first step of realizing the importance of prioritizing, maintaining, & achieving VOCAL FITNESS is to actually recognize that as an occupational &/or professional voice user, you ARE a vocal athlete. To take ownership of this fact is the first step to owning & consistently prioritizing YOUR vocal fitness journey.

Athletes are expected to keep their bodies in optimal shape through conditioning, training, & routine care…so that their bodies will safely uphold the demands of their “jobs” & perform successfully for whatever contest, competition, &/or game they might be involved with. Athletes put greater demands on their bodies & are therefore at higher risk for injuries, hence the high importance of their maintenance of physical fitness. This directly applies to VOCAL athletes, as they put greater demands on their VOICES & are therefore at higher risk of vocal injury (sidenote: the body IS the entire instrument, not just the voice, & therefore full body fitness is extremely important for the VOCAL athlete as well!). This acknowledgement of “higher risk” is not where the story ends though: as a vocal athlete (just like any other athlete), it is up to YOU to prioritize your voice & its health, fitness, conditioning, training, & overall care. It’s a constant, self-empowering, & beautiful journey.

The levels of vocal athlete status can certainly vary (touring pop singer, Broadway performer, fitness instructor, teacher, public speaker, call center representative, coach, etc.), but it is crucial to acknowledge that VOCAL FITNESS is of extreme importance to anyone who places great demands on their voice & whose livelihood is dependent on a functioning voice (this is the definition of professional voice user per Stemple in 2000). We also know from Hunter & Titze (2010) that occupational voicing percentage per hour is more than twice that of non-occupational voicing….and THEN add a mask to that (whew!). So…make it a point to PRIORITIZE your VOCAL FITNESS. This topic gets me very excited because it highlights the purpose of VOXFIT as it combines my passions & the two “worlds” that I live in everyday (medical voice & fitness).
